South Valley Tour

The South Valley Tour begins around 8:00 a.m., with hotel pickup in Cusco. Leaving the city behind, you’ll head southeast along the picturesque highway that connects Cusco with Lake Titicaca. This lesser-known route is rich in archaeological heritage and Andean culture, offering a more tranquil and authentic experience compared to the crowded Sacred Valley.

The first stop is Tipón, an exceptional Inca site located at approximately 3,560 meters (11,680 feet) above sea level and about 23 kilometers from Cusco. Tipón showcases the advanced engineering of the Incas through its precisely cut stone canals, still-functioning irrigation system, and beautifully terraced agricultural platforms. The sound of running water, still channeled from natural springs, creates a serene and spiritual atmosphere that reflects the sacred relationship the Incas had with water.

Continuing the journey, you will reach the pre-Inca archaeological complex of Pikillaqta, built by the Wari civilization around 700–900 A.D. This expansive city, located at around 3,250 meters (10,663 feet), is a rare example of Wari urban planning, with straight roads, rectangular buildings, and defensive walls. Unlike Inca stonework, Pikillaqta's structures are mainly built of adobe and stone, offering a different glimpse into Peru’s ancient past.

The final stop is the colonial town of Andahuaylillas, home to the spectacular Church of San Pedro, often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of the Andes.” Sitting at 3,121 meters (10,240 feet), the church impresses with its baroque interior, golden altars, painted ceilings, and murals that blend Catholic and Andean spiritual elements. Entry includes a brief guided explanation of its history and iconography, revealing how this small church holds centuries of cultural fusion.

After the visit, you’ll enjoy a scenic return to Cusco, arriving around 2:00 p.m. The entire tour covers approximately 60 kilometers round trip and combines archaeology, engineering, and colonial art, all within a half-day adventure perfect for acclimatization or travelers with limited time.
