Your day begins early, with hotel pickup in Cusco around 4:00 AM, starting a scenic drive south through the rural highlands of the Acomayo Province. After approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, you'll arrive at Cusipata or Santa Lucía, small Andean villages where a hearty local breakfast is served — usually consisting of bread, eggs, tea, and fruits — to energize you for the trek ahead.

From here, the drive continues deeper into the highlands until reaching the trailhead at Punta Carretera or Rinconada (location may vary by operator), located at an altitude of around 3,800 to 4,000 meters (12,467 to 13,123 ft). Here, the real adventure begins.

The trek to Waqrapukara typically takes between 2.5 to 3 hours each way, depending on the route taken and group pace. You'll traverse through rugged mountain trails, passing herds of alpacas, high-altitude lagoons, and surreal rocky landscapes shaped by centuries of wind and water erosion. As you ascend, you’ll reach altitudes of up to 4,300 meters (14,107 ft).

The final approach to Waqrapukara is nothing short of breathtaking. Nestled atop a ridge with deep canyons on either side, this Inca ceremonial fortress offers a spectacular reward after the climb. You’ll explore its stone terraces, mysterious temples, and lookouts — all while your guide shares insights into the history, myths, and astronomical significance of this sacred site.

After time to rest, take photos, and absorb the silence and majesty of this remote place, the return trek begins back to the trailhead. A box lunch or picnic-style meal is typically provided along the way or upon return, depending on weather conditions and route timing.

Finally, you'll begin the return drive to Cusco, arriving back at your hotel around 6:00 to 7:00 PM, with a sense of accomplishment and deep connection to one of the most mystical sites in Peru.
