The tour reaches elevations up to 5,200 m.a.s.l., which may affect individuals sensitive to high altitudes. We provide an oxygen tank and first aid kit for emergencies. However, it’s advisable to acclimate in Arequipa (2,335 m.a.s.l.) for at least one day before the tour.

The high-altitude environment means temperatures can vary significantly. Expect strong sun during the day and cold conditions, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. Rain is more common between November and March.

The hike is rated as moderate to challenging due to the altitude. While the trail itself is a short 1.5-hour ascent, it starts near 5,000 meters (16,400 ft) above sea level, making steady pacing essential.

Basic restroom facilities are available at stops along the highway and in towns like Condoroma, but there are no formal restrooms at the trailhead or inside the stone forest itself.

Because private transport takes you directly to the trailhead near 5,000 meters (16,400 ft), the total walking time is relatively short. However, since the stone forest itself reaches over 5,200 meters (17,060 ft), spending at least 1 day in Arequipa beforehand is recommended to ensure a comfortable experience, though individual tolerance to elevation varies. For active travelers, this high-altitude day trip also serves as great preparation for further mountaineering or trekking routes in Peru, such as Misti, Chachani, or high-alpine circuits in Cusco and Huaraz.
